This Prayer Never Misses

Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. (Romans 8:26-27)

Many times, we do not know what we should pray for as we ought. That’s not a rebuke but a plain statement of fact about the human condition. We are limited. Our understanding is partial. When we come to God in prayer with our best natural thinking about what we need and what should happen, we are working with incomplete information. God knew that about us before we did, and He made provision for it. That provision is the Holy Spirit praying through you in tongues. Paul was not being vague here. The groanings that cannot be expressed in natural language, the intercession that bypasses the limits of your understanding, is the Spirit of God using your mouth to pray prayers perfectly aligned with the will of the Father.

Think about what that means in practical terms. There are situations in your life right now where you do not know how to pray. You do not have enough information. You cannot see far enough down the road. You do not know what the enemy is planning or what God is orchestrating behind what you can see. But the Holy Spirit knows all of it. When you yield your voice to Him in prayer, He prays through you with full knowledge of everything you cannot see, everything you do not know, and everything that needs to be covered.

This is why Jesus listed speaking with new tongues right alongside casting out devils as a sign that would follow believers. He said that praying in tongues is important to His plan. It’s not a small gift for personal encouragement only. It is a weapon. It is a lifeline. It is the Holy Spirit, who is God, using your mouth to accomplish things in the Spirit that natural prayer simply cannot reach.

Practical Application

Set aside time specifically to pray in the Spirit today, not as a warm-up to your regular prayer time, but as a focused act of yielding to the Holy Spirit. Trust that what He is praying through you is perfectly aligned with the will of God, even when your mind cannot follow what is being said.

Ephesians 6:18; Matthew 10:20
