Planted by the Rivers of Water

And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. (Psalm 1:3)

This picture of prosperity begins with a sharp contrast. The blessed man described here does not walk in the counsel of the ungodly but instead delights in the law of the Lord, meditating on it continually. What a person allows into their life to shape their thinking, and whose counsel and wisdom they follow, has direct consequences for the kind of life they live. Constant input from voices opposed to God's ways produces very different fruit than constant meditation on His Word.

The psalmist portrays God’s view of prosperity as a tree planted by rivers of water. That tree does not have to struggle to find nourishment when the weather outside is dry, because its roots run deep into a steady source. Its leaves do not wither, and it continually yields fruit. That tree is not forced or hurried but steady and reliable because of where it is planted.

This same Psalm also warns against the love of money as a root of many sorrows and encourages believers to be lenders rather than borrowers. When you live this way, you avoid the entanglements that come with debt. Real, lasting prosperity is always rooted in consistent meditation on God's Word and disciplined stewardship, not in shortcuts, and it grows steadily rather than appearing overnight.

Practical Application

Who is speaking into your life right now, and what has most consistently shaped your thinking lately? Replace any time you have spent absorbing ungodly counsel with deliberate meditation on God's Word today.
