The Consequences of Sin

Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned. (Romans 5:12)

Sin has consequences. Because of Adam's sin, we all inherited a sin nature, and death passed on to us all. But have you ever thought about the weight of this truth? How does it affect not only us but our children and their children?

In Genesis chapter 2, God commanded Adam not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. But Adam, in his free will, disobeyed God's command and thus became a slave to sin. This decision changed his nature, and the nature of sin passed down to every single child that is born, including you and me. See, sin is not just an action; it is a nature. It is a part of us we cannot get rid of on our own. It may seem unfair that we have to bear the consequences of Adam's sin, but it is a harsh reality that we cannot ignore. The sin nature is so deeply ingrained in us we cannot escape its clutches through human effort or sacrifice. This sin nature causes us to be separated from God and leads us to the ultimate consequence of sin - death.

The good news is that God didn’t leave us there. He gave us Jesus. Jesus came to earth as a human, lived a perfect life, and died a horrible death on the cross for our sins. He died so that through his death and resurrection, we would be freed from the power of sin in every aspect of our lives.

Don’t take this revelation for granted. It’s the power of the Gospel! As believers, we should live our lives full of gratitude for what Jesus has done for us and seek to live a life that honors Him and His sacrifice. We are no longer slaves to sin, but we are children of God. We have been set free, and it is our privilege and responsibility to live a life that reflects that truth.

Practical Application

Sin has consequences. The Bible says sin pays with death, but thank God, that Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection set us free from the power of sin and death!

Genesis 2:15; 1 Corinthians 4:4
