Be Ready with a Song

Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous: for praise is comely for the upright. (Psalm 33:1)

God doesn’t just tell us that praise is good; He says it is “comely.” That word means appropriate, suitable, beautiful, proper, or fitting. Praise is not awkward for believers. Praise fits us as believers better than a perfectly tailored suit.

Silence does not define our character. Complaining should feel like a foreign language that's hard to speak for us. On the other hand, rejoicing should come naturally to men and women of faith.

The word “rejoice” also involves shouting, spinning, leaping, and celebrating with your voice. To rejoice is not to quietly agree with what God is doing. It is a way of showing our confidence in God’s plan through joyful expressions.

The Hebrew word used for praise here is tehillah, which means a spontaneous song, hymn, vocal worship, or celebration set to melody. Tehillah is not whispered gratitude or a planned piece of music. It is voiced delight put to music that flows from your spirit.

The worship songs you sing on Sunday should flow from your spirit throughout the week, and when the worship leader encourages the congregation to worship the Lord, your mouth should be filled with spontaneous melody and words blessing the Lord.

Always keep a song in your heart so you're ready to confront any lies or accusations from the enemy when they appear, even if you’re not in church. Paul instructed us to sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs in our hearts to the Lord.

Practical Application

Always be ready with a song from your spirit. When you sing, your soul is more easily aligned with your spirit. You can sing spontaneously or get a song you sing on Sunday planted deeply in your heart. Then, be ready to release it in your private time of worship with the Lord or as you face situations throughout the day.

Isaiah 61:3, Ephesians 5:19
