For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. (Romans 12:3)

The Apostle Paul made it a point to talk about the grace given to him. Did you know there are at least 17 (and perhaps 18) different English words that the Bible translates as grace? The actual Greek word charis, but it is translated many ways. In this text, Paul used the word grace to describe the anointing on his life.

Paul said, “I am anointed to tell you this.” The anointing is the burden-removing, yoke-destroying power of God. Paul was saying your burdens will be removed and your yokes destroyed if you get this revelation. What was that revelation? Be humble.

Humility is the antidote to arrogance. It involves acknowledging that everything we have and all we are is because of God. Our gifts, talents, and achievements are not products of our own greatness, but manifestations of God's goodness displayed in our lives.

That’s why Paul said to think soberly. Thinking soberly means maintaining a sound mind and avoiding extremes. We should not be carried away by flattery or self-promotion. We must be open to God's correction and guidance, recognizing that we are constantly growing and learning on our journey of faith. When we do, we operate in our measure of faith. Paul used the Greek word metron, which means a limited proportion.

Faith is not a one-size-fits-all concept; God distributes it according to His wisdom and our ability and willingness to walk it out. The faith we receive from God equips us to fulfill the specific assignments He purposed for us to fulfill. So do not compare your faith or calling to others. Embrace the faith and the calling God has given you.

Practical Application

Embrace your individual uniqueness and the measure of faith that God has equipped you with for the specific purposes He has for you. Don’t fall into the trap of comparison. Thank God today for how He has uniquely created you.
