And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king's meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king. Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave unto Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abednego. (Daniel 1:5-7)
These Hebrew boys were more than just captives; they were specially chosen vessels handpicked by God to stand before kings. Babylon tried to give them new names, new diets, and new worship practices, but nothing the world around them did could change who they knew they were. Notice that Daniel and his companions were anything but ordinary. The Bible describes them as having “no blemish,” “skillful in wisdom,” and “cunning in knowledge.” In other words, God had equipped them before they were ever promoted. God is in the business of preparing people before they face the test.
These four young men were offered the best meal possible in Babylon: the king’s meat and wine. But what might have seemed like favor was actually meant to assimilate them into Babylonian society.
Similarly, the world around us will try to persuade us to change our identity and follow its path. Make no mistake, this wasn’t just about food. It was about redefining their identity. When Babylon provided them food, they also changed their names. The name “Daniel” means “God is my judge,” but “Belteshazzar” is associated with a Babylonian god. However, Daniel never worshipped in Babylonian ways. He remained true to his identity in God and His Word. Others may mislabel you, but your destiny is determined by God, not your environment, government, or background.
Practical Application
Don’t let favoritism from others compromise your identity or purpose. Your true identity is rooted in what God has said and how He has created you. Never be fooled by anyone or anything else.
Daniel 2:49; Daniel 4:8
