Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. (Romans 8:35-37)
Paul began these verses with a rhetorical question that many might have been thinking: Who or what could disconnect us from receiving the love of Christ? He then listed as many difficult things as possible, including tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, peril, or sword (or death). He concluded that regardless of our circumstances, none of them could ever disconnect us from the bond of love that Jesus has for us.
Paul continued, writing that the world would account for us as sheep for the slaughter. That doesn’t mean that we are sheep to be slaughtered. It means the world will count believers as “good as dead,” “never relevant,” or “canceled” (as the culture around us often deems faith-filled people). However, Paul countered the world’s idea with a triumphant declaration of faith: “In all these things, we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.”
This is what our faith attitude should be when problems show up. We must hold a defiant, unyielding belief that, despite the problematic circumstances, we are always victorious in Christ. When the enemy attempts to discourage or defeat us, we can confidently declare, "This isn’t going to work. I am a faith person. At the end of the day, I know I win.”
Practical Application
When trouble or fears try to take over your mind or body, declare that you are more than a conqueror. Remind yourself and the devil of what Jesus has done for you. Your victory is not based on how smart you are, how strong you are, or how connected you are. It is only based on your unwavering faith and hope in Jesus.
