The Power of Corporate Prayer

And Judah gathered themselves together, to ask help of the Lord: even out of all the cities of Judah they came to seek the Lord. And Jehoshaphat stood in the congregation of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the Lord, before the new court, And said, O Lord God of our fathers, art not thou God in heaven? and rulest not thou over all the kingdoms of the heathen? and in thine hand is there not power and might, so that none is able to withstand thee? (2 Chronicles 20:4-6)

There is a special power in prayer that only appears when people come together in unity. Nothing about Judah’s gathering and seeking the Lord was casual or easy. They stopped their work, made time, and united in their pursuit to be in the House of God. When the crisis arrived, they didn’t scatter or hide; they united.

Note that the Scripture says “out of all the cities of Judah.” These weren’t the people who lived close to the church, or the elite leadership, or just the warriors. These were men, women, and children. Entire multi-generational families gathered, stood, and prayed.

Then Jehoshaphat stood in the middle of the congregation. This is very important in this passage. He didn’t pray in secret. He stood with all the people and they sought God together.

As the group of people prayed together, Jehoshaphat explained “that none is able to withstand Thee.” He said that God is not only the God of believers but also over all the kingdoms of the world. God is not threatened by foreign attacks, global powers, or hostility against Him. He is all-powerful and guarantees victory in every aspect of life.

Practical Application

Make prayer a regular practice and priority in your life by gathering with your church family, your own family, or a group of believers. Pray together and trust that God’s hand will move in powerful ways.

1 Chronicles 29:12; Acts 4:31
