For many are called, but few are chosen. (Matthew 22:14)
The Greek word for called is kletos, and it means an invitation, a beckoning, or a summoning to an event of exceptional significance. In ancient Greek, this term described a select group of individuals who were specially invited by a king to attend an exclusive feast.
Imagine receiving an invitation to a closed-door event, a celebration reserved for a chosen few. What an incredible honor it would be! Similarly, when God called you, it was no ordinary summons. It was a divine invitation to be part of His eternal plan. It's an honor that should fill your heart with gratitude. Being born again isn't a coincidence; it's a privilege and a prestigious honor. God has specially invited you to enjoy eternal significance.
Jesus once shared a parable which emphasized the significance of embracing this divine call. It's a parable about those who were specially invited by the King to a banquet, but in a shocking turn of events, each of them declined to come!
I’m sure that those who heard that parable were shocked! Who would decline an opportunity to be at the King’s table and feast with such bounty and opulence? Jesus’ parable concluded with the King inviting others who were more receptive to his invitation.
As mature Christians, we must recognize the unique position we hold. The Lord has chosen us for a specific reason. It's not about being a “big I” or a “little you”. We have all been sanctified, preserved, and called to serve a higher purpose. It is an honor to respond to God’s call. We shouldn’t run from God’s invitation, but we should respond positively and remain faithful to our purpose.
Let's embrace the purpose for which we have been chosen. Remember, you are not here by accident. You are chosen. You are called. You are an essential part of a unique tapestry in God's eternal plan.
Practical Application
You are called, purposed, anointed! If you are tempted to feel what you are doing is insignificant, remember that you have been called and chosen by the King Himself, with an engraved invitation! It is an honor to serve the King.
