Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name; worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. (Psalm 29:2)

When we start conversations with God and spend time with Him, our first goal and heart should never be asking Him for anything. We should begin our conversation with the Most High with worship. Psalm 29:2 tells us to give Him the glory due to His name. This means acknowledging His majesty, His power, and His worth. Modern worship has often become very self-focused and self-centered, celebrating who we are and our identity. Those things are essential, but not in worship. Worship is centered around God Himself. Our worship should be about recognizing who God is rather than focusing on what He can do for us.

The phrase beauty of holiness signifies the purity and splendor of God’s nature. True worship involves reverence and awe about who God is. It’s full of wonder and fascination.

God wants you to know Him more. He has a personality, feelings, and desires, and He wants you to know Him more intimately than ever. True worship is chasing after His person, not His provision. Worship Him by stating what you know about Him: He is holy, righteous, and just. He is holy and mighty. He is full of wisdom, peace, and love.

If we pray to ask things of God without taking the time to worship, we ask wrongly and get side-tracked by our selfish desires and fleshly pursuits. Worshipping as we begin conversations with Him helps our hearts align with His. It helps us ensure we are starting from the proper position.

Practical Application

Spend several minutes worshipping before you begin praying. Acknowledge who God is and how wonderful He is. Then, ask what you will. Your heart will be aligned in the right place.

1 Chronicles 16:29; Psalm 97:9
