But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise. (Matthew 22:5)

In Matthew 22:5, Jesus talked about people who made light of the fact that they were invited to the marriage supper. These are the type of folks who are quick to make fun of Christians, the church, and the message of the Gospel.

In the very first Psalm, the psalmist wrote about the blessed man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. If you want to be blessed, it is imperative that you distance yourself from those who scorn Scripture.

This doesn’t mean that you don’t minister to them; it simply means that you don’t spend all your time with them. Distance yourself from those who would poke fun at God’s way.

If you want to live the blessed life, find people who help you meditate on the Word and share your desire to seek after God more closely.

In this parable of Jesus, the scoffers heard what God was offering, and they walked away from it by doing only what they wanted to do. They went after what they thought was important in life.To them, the Word of God was of little importance in their everyday life.

Those who don’t prioritize God’s Word and His ways will constantly chase after unattainable happiness, unattainable success, and unattainable satisfaction. Happiness, success, and satisfaction will be unattainable, because the second they get what they thought they needed, they realize they are still not satisfied because only God’s Word satisfies. Only God’s Word brings us to the blessed life that God wants for us.

Practical Application

Distance yourself from people who make light of the Bible or Christianity. Scoffers will do nothing to lift you up; they will only pull you down to their level. They cannot help you live the blessed life.

Psalm 1:1; Matthew 6:33
