Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching; Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness. (Romans 12:7-8)
Here, the Apostle Paul provides guidance for those involved in ministry and service within the church. Whether it's teaching, exhorting, giving, or leading, each role requires specific qualities and attitudes.
Paul encourages us to wait on our ministering and teaching. That doesn’t mean don’t do it. It means we must rely on the Holy Spirit for wisdom and direction, rather than rushing ahead in our own strength. Waiting on God allows us to be strong in His plans and purposes, ensuring that our efforts are fruitful and impactful.
After talking about ministry and teaching, Paul emphasized the importance of simplicity and sincerity in our giving. The Greek word haplotes, translated as simplicity, means acting with sincerity, generosity, and without self-seeking motives. When we give or serve others, we must ensure it comes from a genuine desire to bless and meet needs, rather than seeking personal gain or recognition. We don’t serve in a way that puffs ourselves up or proves to others that we are the best pastor, the best leader, or the best servant ever. In fact, living this way means we don’t tout our own ability or strength, but we help and support others in their struggles.
Finally, Paul highlighted the need for diligence in leadership. Those entrusted with the responsibility of guiding and shepherding others should approach their roles with commitment and hard work. Diligence means giving our best efforts and going the extra mile to serve those under our care. It reflects a heart that is dedicated to the well-being and growth of others by leading by example. Put in the hours, put in the hard work, the blood, sweat, and tears, because it’s worth it.
Practical Application
If you hold a leadership position in the church or the business world, commit yourself to always lead with diligence. Be diligent in studying God's Word, seeking His wisdom and guidance to lead those God has assigned to you. Work hard and set a godly example. Exhibit joy as you serve the Lord and others with all your heart.
