Don’t Step Into Where God Didn’t Send You

My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation. (James 3:1)
Â
The teaching office, the ministry of standing before people and declaring the Word of God as their spiritual authority, carries a weight most people underestimate. James wrote plainly that those who take up that position receive a greater judgment, not because God is harsh toward ministers, but because the responsibility is enormous. People believe what is said by those in positions of authority and act on what they hear. If what is spoken is wrong, they can ruin their lives.
God puts people in the fivefold ministry. He sets apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers in the church. That is His doing, not man's. And when a person steps into one of those offices without the calling and the sending of God behind them, they have stepped outside their lane, with real consequences. Operating in a place God did not put you in opens doors to things in your own life that were never meant to be there, that can lead to premature death, poverty, and spiritual confusion. These are not random things. They are what can happen when you carry an assignment God never gave you.
I am not trying to discourage anyone from ministry. But if you are called, go toward it with honesty. If God has called you, go. If He has not, do not. The body of Christ needs every member functioning in the place God actually assigned them, not in the place that looks impressive or feels significant.
Practical Application
Take time today to examine the profession and position you find yourself in and ask yourself honestly whether God placed you there or whether you stepped into it on your own. If you are sensing a call to ministry, seek the counsel of a trusted spiritual authority in your life before moving forward. Let God do the sending.
