Pursue the Kingdom

For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. (Romans 14:17)

Many people spend their lives chasing after what the Kingdom promises to add. Remember that Jesus said to seek first the Kingdom and His righteousness. Paul expanded on this in Romans, explaining what the Kingdom truly consists of. In fact, he starts by clarifying what the Kingdom is not: “meat and drink.” Paul understood the audience he was speaking to and was aware of the debate among the churches about which dietary rules should or should not be followed. He emphasized that this is not the most important focus. The Kingdom isn’t based on the world’s systems, outward customs, or religious habits. It’s also not about the possessions you can accumulate or gain. The Kingdom of God is a way of living in the earth that brings Heaven’s results. Is there sickness in heaven? Is there lack?

In fact, the next word, “peace,” is the Greek word eirene. This Greek word doesn’t just mean the absence of conflict. It signifies a quietness of the soul, a settled assurance, an internal security and prosperity. When you live with that kind of peace, you aren’t ruled by fear.

The phrase Paul used to describe the Kingdom is joy in the Holy Ghost. Joy is not the same as happiness. Happiness depends on good circumstances. Joy is relational; it comes from being in fellowship with the Holy Spirit. When the Kingdom is active in your life, joy becomes your default. Even if problems are significant, Paul said this joy is “in the Holy Ghost.” This means the more we follow the Holy Spirit’s guidance, the more we experience this unshakeable joy. When you say “Yes” to the Spirit, you’re saying “Yes” to Kingdom life.
