Nine Ways the Holy Spirit Wants to Move through Believers

But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit. To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. (1 Corinthians 12:7-11)

The Greek word for manifestation in verse 7 is phanerosis, which means an expression, exhibition, or public display of hidden power. The Holy Spirit doesn’t come to sit silently inside you. He comes to be seen, to be heard, and to be experienced and manifested through you.

Some Christians believe that the call to supernatural ministry is for other believers, not for themselves. Notice what Paul wrote to the Corinthian Christians about the manifestation of the Spirit. He wrote that it was given to every man to profit withal. That phrase profit withal in Greek is sumphero, meaning to bear together, to contribute mutually, and to lift together as one.

The gifts of the Spirit were meant to unite the church as they operated corporately through the power of the Holy Spirit. Each gift serves a specific purpose in the body of Christ. Tongues and interpretation provide insight and understanding into what God is doing and thinking. Prophecy strengthens and builds us up in encouragement. Gifts of healing illustrate God’s love in action.

Now, it’s important to note that every one of these gifts belongs to the Spirit, not to us. He distributes as He wills, but He manifests through those who are willing. The Church isn’t weak because it lacks power. It’s weak when it neglects the power it already possesses.

Practical Application

Are you actively seeking the Holy Spirit's guidance each day, or are you waiting for a special service or revival night? Ask God to activate one of these nine gifts in you during a specific moment (grocery line, small group, conversation). Lean in, listen, and obey. Your hunger and surrender will create opportunities for adventure with the Holy Spirit.

Romans 12:6; 1 Corinthians 14:12
