And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. (Romans 12:2)
Society is constantly changing their ideas about what is moral, what is truth, and what is right and as Christians, we are bombarded with countless influences and pressures trying to shape our thoughts and actions. No matter what generation you are a part of, there are media influences trying to manipulate you into thinking and feeling as they do. Truth is, this is nothing new.
The Apostle Paul saw the same issue happening throughout Rome as he penned this portion of his epistle to the Christians in Rome. He told them not to conform to the patterns and ideologies of the age in which they lived. Instead, he urged them to undergo a transformative process by renewing their minds with the Word of God. What was true then is equally true today.
Paul used the Greek word metamorphoo to describe what happens when we read the Word. That word means to be changed by the renewing. Renovation is a process of stripping away something that is old and bringing in something new. Just as we can renovate an old building, our minds also need a makeover from the worldly ways that try to bombard our thinking. When we take the time to meditate on God's Word, our thoughts are transformed and our perspective is renewed. As we immerse ourselves in Scripture, we gain a countercultural way of thinking—one that is aligned with God's perfect will for our lives.
The responsibility to see His will fulfilled in us lies with us. We must allow the renovation to take place, and that will require consciously submitting our minds and emotions to God's truth and get rid of old thought patterns that stop us from fulfilling God’s will for our lives. God's Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path (Psalm 119:105), guiding us towards what is good, pleasing, and complete in His eyes.
Practical Application
Identify any areas in your life where you have conformed to organizations, thought patterns, or politically correct jargon. Recognize these behaviors and attitudes that do not align with God's Word and surrender them to Him. Keep your mind renewed by the Word of God and get rid of outside influence.
