For the man is not of the woman: but the woman of the man. Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man. (1 Corinthians 11:8-9)

The Bible can get very personal. 1 Corinthians 11:8-9 is a small part of a discussion about biblical husband-wife relationships.

We read in the book of Genesis that as God created everything from the seas to birds and bees, and as He completed each day, He said, “That’s good!” On day six, He created man and placed him in the Garden, giving him the responsibility to dress and keep it. It’s important to note that God spoke to Adam about not eating of the tree in the middle of the garden before He created woman. Genesis 2:17-18 says, “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.” As Paul noted in 1 Corinthians 11:8-9, the woman came from man. Genesis 2:21-22 says, “And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof. And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.”

God specially formed woman to help man, but the fact that the woman was created to assist man does not belittle her importance, intelligence, or brilliance. Most married men will freely admit how much they need their wives’ help in so many ways. I know I do!

Practical Application

If you want a happy, peaceful marriage, you will acknowledge and appreciate what God created each of you to do.
