For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's. (1 Corinthians 6:20)
There is a battle that you have faced since you could make your own decisions. It’s been a fight that you have waged. Sometimes you won; other times you lost. We’ve all dealt with it. It is the struggle between our spirit's desire to honor God and our body's tendency to seek its own desires. Have you ever noticed that your body doesn’t want to be pure? Your body doesn’t want to be holy. Your body doesn’t want to follow God’s Word. However, we are called to glorify God in both our bodies and spirits.
A major part of glorifying God in our bodies means understanding that this physical earth-suit is a temple of the Holy Spirit. Just like a temple is a sacred place where God is worshipped, our bodies have become the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit, so we are called to worship Him with it. Understanding this revelation should change how we treat our bodies. These temples are called to be given the utmost respect and care by keeping them pure and holy. Keeping our bodies pure is not just about avoiding harmful or damaging behaviors; it also means stewarding our bodies well through proper maintenance. Just like we service our cars to keep them running smoothly, as good stewards, we are called to focus on our physical health through balanced diets, exercising, and getting enough rest. When our bodies are well-cared for, we can more effectively carry out God's purposes in our lives. If you are outside of the will of God in things pertaining to your body, you can open the door to sickness and disease and attacks of the enemy.
When we embrace the responsibility of honoring God with our bodies and spirits, we create an environment where God's power and presence can work stronger, quicker, and more boldly through us.
Practical Application
What steps have you not taken in nurturing or caring for your body? What does your current food consumption and workout regimen look like? If you do not have a physical plan for your body, then you are planning to fail. Decide to honor God with your temple by putting a plan together and doing it.
