God Does Not Dwell in the Building on the Corner

Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet, Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest? (Acts 7:48-49)
Stephen said this to the Sanhedrin just before they stoned him: “The Most High does not dwell in temples made by human hands.” He was not disrespecting the temple; instead, he was making a theological point that the leadership refused to accept. He emphasized that God has never been confined to a building, and that the building has always pointed to something much greater.
In the Old Testament, God was willing to dwell in a tabernacle, then a temple, because that was the level of access His people had at that time. He limited His manifest presence to a location so they could come to Him, encounter Him, and be reminded that He was their God and they were His people. It was not ideal; it was God’s mercy adapting to their condition.
But God's original design was never a building. It was a person. He created man in His image, breathed life into him, and walked with him in the cool of the day in the garden. That was always the plan—not a house of stone and cedar, but a living, breathing temple made of flesh and bone: you. Your body is what God has always wanted to inhabit. And now, because of Jesus, that is exactly where He lives. He is not in a building on a corner, but rather He is you. Everywhere you go, the temple of God is present. Every city you drive through, every hospital you enter, every home you visit—God is there because He is in you.
Practical Application
Walk through your day-to-day life with the awareness that you carry God's presence into every environment. You're not just going to work, the grocery store, or the doctor—you are bringing the temple of God into those places. Let this knowledge change how you carry yourself and how you interact with those around you.
Acts 17:24; 1 Corinthians 3:16
