Encouraging John

And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses. (Matthew 11:7-8)

John, at that time, was sitting in prison, wondering why Jesus hadn’t yet overthrown all the injustice of Rome. When John’s disciples came to ask Jesus if He was “the one,” Jesus didn’t rebuke John for his questions. Instead, Jesus began complimenting John and talking about his ministry. Jesus started saying that John wasn’t like a “reed shaken with the wind.” This phrase was used to describe people who were politically soft, willing to bend with culture and political pressure. John was a solid rock in a world full of swaying reeds. Jesus celebrated this because the Kingdom requires believers to stand for truth, especially when faced with pressure.

Next, Jesus explained that John wasn’t a man of “soft clothing.” In Jewish culture, someone described as “soft clothing” grew up in comfort and luxury because they supported leaders regardless of righteousness. The wilderness wasn’t John’s punishment; it was his assignment and calling.

What makes this passage so powerful is that, despite his difficulties, John was encouraged and supported by Jesus. John had moments of doubt, but Jesus still affirmed his ministry and calling. Jesus does not withdraw honor when you are in a low moment.

God doesn’t give up on you, even when your heart is tired.

Practical Application

Do not judge your effectiveness or purpose by a difficult moment or season. Jesus doesn’t change your identity based on temporary discouragement. Speak the Word over yourself, especially the promises of God, and believe that what He says is true.

Matthew 3:4; 2 Corinthians 11:27
