Creation is Groaning for Sons

For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.  And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body. (Romans 8:22-23)

When you hear someone groan, it's often a cry for help. Paul wrote that creation groans and travails in pain together until now. Not just people—creation itself, the planet—is under strain, waiting for something to happen.

Then Paul explained that it’s not only creation; even we ourselves groan inwardly, eagerly awaiting the adoption—the redemption of our bodies. Even Spirit-filled believers still feel the pressure of living in a world that is not yet fully restored. So, if you've ever felt that ache, that sense that something is off, that things aren’t as they should be, you’re not crazy. You are experiencing the groan. But don’t miss what the groan is pointing toward. It points to a redemption that is coming—the revealing of the sons of God. In other words, the world is waiting to see what happens when God’s people rise into their identity and become all that He has called them to be.

Before you step into everything, Paul told us that the Holy Spirit will help you. Romans 8 says the Spirit helps our weaknesses. Wherever you lack, the Holy Spirit will empower you to move forward. So don’t let the groan turn into despair or worry. Instead, let that groan become prayer. The enemy wants issues, problems, and mess to make you bitter. God wants the groan to make you hungry for what the Kingdom is bringing.

Practical Application

When you feel that groan, don't numb it. Pray and worship. Ask the Holy Spirit to strengthen you. Then do one Kingdom act today that pushes back darkness, even if it is small.
