And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever. (John 14:16)

When you think of the word comfort, what usually comes to mind? A certain type of food? A blanket? A particular amount of money in your bank account? A person who stands by your side?

Many say they take comfort in such things, but we can only find real comfort in a person.

The Holy Ghost is called to be our Comforter. The word translated comforter in Greek is Parakletos and means helper, intercessor, advocate, strengthener, standby, and teacher.

Why do we need the Comforter? Because Jesus promised us life will not be comfortable.

There will be times when you can’t do something on your own and the Holy Spirit will be a Helper. There will be times when you need someone to stand on your behalf and the Holy Spirit will be your Intercessor. He is an Advocate when you need support. He is a Strengthener when you feel mentally, emotionally, or physically weak. He is a Standby when you need someone to encourage you and hold you. He is a Teacher when you don’t know how or what to think about a situation.

Life is full of uncomfortable situations and that is why we have the Spirit of Grace to comfort us in every situation.

Practical Application – When you find yourself in a situation that seems uncomfortable, take a moment; pause and say, “Holy Spirit, thank you for being my Comforter. I accept Your help at this moment”.

Hebrews 10:19; John 15:26
