Building With God

For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building. According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 3:9-11)

Paul painted a powerful picture of what it means to be a Christian. We are not just slaves of God meant to do whatever His bidding is. He does not demand that we do anything for Him—because God wants us to do everything with Him.

Being laborers with God is a powerful personal statement that tells us that God desires everything we do to be in communication and communion with Him.

He continued by saying that we are God's husbandry (garden) and God's building. That means that although God ultimately has the ownership, He wants us involved and our hands to be a part of doing what He has planned and is building.

Paul called himself a wise masterbuilder but he didn’t mean that as an apostle; he was building things for God by himself. Paul was only a wise master builder because he labored with God. Paul also explained that he was not the only one who would build. He was with God, laying a foundation, and God would be with others, continually building the structure of His church.

Paul made the point that anyone who builds anything in this world, including businesses, relationships, a ministry, or a church, must do so with the proper foundation: Jesus Christ. We are co-laborers with God. If you want what you build to last, build with God, making Jesus the focus of all you do.

Practical Application

When you are frustrated at work or stressed because of the tasks you need to do, take a moment to thank God for working with you. Receive His strength and wisdom, and see yourself doing everything with God.

Ephesians 2:20; Isaiah 28:16
