There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. (Romans 8:1-2)
Most believers love the “part a” of this verse. They preach and shout that there is to be no condemnation for their past wrongdoings, but that’s not how Paul ended his statement. He included a condition. He added “…who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” The “no condemnation” isn’t just about being saved. It’s about living in submission. Walking in the Spirit is a daily choice to fully submit ourselves to Him.
Make no mistake, two laws are always at work in our world: the law of sin and death, and the law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus. These are not just suggestions or metaphors; they reflect how the world is truly governed. It doesn’t take long to turn on the news or scroll through social media to see a friend who has received a negative diagnosis, or to observe family members and coworkers struggling with lack, confusion, or depression. It becomes clear that death is trying to reign in this world.
But you are not meant to be under death’s power. You have been set free! Hallelujah! But freedom without knowledge is like holding a key and never opening the door. Freedom requires understanding what Christ has done, believing in what it means for you, and obeying the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The Law of the Spirit of Life is yours to live in, but you must activate it. The moment you choose to walk by the Spirit, you override whatever in the world’s system tries to hold you back.
Practical Application
Be mindful of what influences your daily decisions. If your choices are driven by your flesh (your emotions, pressure, or worldly expectations), make a deliberate effort to readjust and walk in the Spirit. Continuously seek the Holy Spirit's guidance and vision. Listen to His voice, follow His direction, and stay committed.
Romans 6:18; John 8:32
