You Don’t Need a Resume to Receive from Jesus

Now when he had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum. And a certain centurion’s servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die. And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant. And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying, That he was worthy for whom he should do this: For he loveth our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue. (Luke 7:1-5)

The elders sent to Jesus on the centurion's behalf did not simply ask for help. They made the case for why he deserved it. “He loves our nation. He built us a synagogue.” In other words, this man had done enough good to earn Jesus’ favorable response. Many believers have their own version of the same logic. They say, “I have given faithfully and served so many hours, so I should be healed from this issue. Surely, because I have done so much, I qualify more than someone newer in the faith.” But we must remember that every good gift comes from above, freely given, not distributed according to a merit system based on years served or dollars given.

Healing cannot be earned, and thinking of it that way sets up a dangerous comparison trap, where you measure your walk with God against someone else's and wonder why they received something you have not yet seen. Healing is something God wants us to receive, so it flows from God's grace and generosity, not from your performance. You do not need a resume to present to Jesus. You need faith to receive what He has already made available.

Practical Application

What are you believing God for? Remind yourself of His love for you and His desire for you to receive what He gives. Do not present your case as why you deserve something. Remind yourself of who you are in Christ.
