You Become a Slave to What You Stand Beside

What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.  Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? (Romans 6:15-16)

Romans 6 asks a question that people still ask today: “Since we are under grace, can we just sin?” Paul’s answer is clear: God forbid. The word yield in Romans 6:16 is paristem in the  Greek. It means whom you stand beside. Here is the principle: whatever you stand beside, you become a servant to it. In fact, the word servant is doulas, which means slave. You are a slave to whoever you obey. If you obey sin, you face death. If you obey righteousness, you receive a blessing.

This is why sin is never harmless. It’s not just a mistake; it’s an alignment. You don’t just sin; you stand beside it, and it pays you in death.

Righteousness works the same way. When you obey God, you stand beside Him. When you obey the Word, you align with life. When you obey the Spirit, you step into righteousness, which pays you in freedom and blessing.

Grace is not an excuse to sin. Grace is the empowerment of the Holy Spirit to help you obey the Word. The Word of God is the most important thing in your life. You do not get to pick and choose which parts to follow. You cannot say, "I like this verse, so I will do it. I don’t like that one, so I will ignore it." You do not get to say, "My body says this, so that is what I am doing." Many in the church have walked away from God’s Word on the simplest issues.

Whatever you stand beside, you become a slave to. Stand beside the Word. Stand beside obedience. That is where life is. Grace does not give you permission to be lazy or disobedient. Grace empowers you to obey God's Word. Stand beside God's Word and you will become a slave to righteousness and see God’s blessings grow in every part of your life.

Practical Application

Identify one area where you keep yielding to the flesh. Be honest with yourself. Then repent, not with shame, but with clarity. Cut off the access point. Replace it with obedience. Ask the Holy Spirit for strength and then take action.
