When the Holy Spirit Prays for You

Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:26-28)
The Holy Spirit helps us in our infirmities. That word doesn’t just mean illness; it also includes weakness and limitations. There are times when you don’t know what to do next or how to pray effectively. Paul wrote that “We know not what we should pray for as we ought.” That isn’t unbelief; it’s humility. Some situations are too complex for natural understanding. There are seasons when you can’t see the full picture of what’s happening. That’s when the Holy Spirit steps in.
When you pray in tongues, the Holy Spirit intercedes for you and on your behalf. He prays through you, not just with you, using your mouth as an instrument. The Holy Spirit prays perfectly in accordance with the will. That should bring relief—you’re not guessing; you’re cooperating with God’s will and His power.
The Prophet Isaiah wrote in Isaiah 55 that God’s thoughts are higher than any human’s thoughts, and His ways are higher. If that’s true, relying only on your mind will always limit your prayer life. But when you pray in the Spirit, God’s thoughts are released into the earth through your cooperation. God’s Word goes out and does not return empty; it accomplishes what He sends it to do. Faith is agreeing with what God wants to happen.
When the Spirit prays through you, that agreement is guaranteed. If you don’t know what to pray, the Holy Spirit does. Praying in the Spirit allows God’s will to be spoken into your life with accuracy and power.
Practical Application
Set aside time today to pray in tongues specifically about an area where you feel uncertain or even fearful. Do not think about it or analyze it. Just pray in the Spirit. Then thank God that His will is being worked out on your behalf.
