What Jesus Prayed for You

These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. (John 17:1-3)

What most people refer to as the “Lord’s Prayer” (Our Father, who art in Heaven…) is actually the disciple's prayer. However, John 17:1- 3 is part of the Lord’s Prayer that Jesus prayed, revealing His heart and desire for all who would follow Him. What did Jesus want? He desired His followers to walk in the fullness of eternal life now.

Eternal life isn’t just something that occurs once we die and go to heaven; it’s something we’re meant to live today. It’s a way of living with heaven’s authority and power, transforming the very world we have been sent into.

Eternal life isn’t merely a time period; it defines the kind of life we are called to live. The moment you said “yes” to Jesus, eternal life became more than just a promise for your future—it became your present possession. You are called to experience eternal life now. This means you're not just looking forward to heaven; you’re living from heaven.

When eternal life is your reality, your perspective changes. You no longer see through the limited eyes of fear, scarcity, and striving. Instead, you see through the eyes of heaven. Problems become opportunities for God’s glory. Trials are viewed through the lens of victory. People aren’t threats—they’re potential sons and daughters. You stop reacting and start reigning.

Living with eternal life means you don’t have to see yourself as a victim; you are already victorious.

Practical Application

View yourself and your problems from heaven’s perspective. When you feel tempted to worry, remind yourself: “I possess eternal life now. I bring Jesus’ authority and power into this moment.”

John 6:37; John 17:24
