Upheld by the Word of His Power

Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high: Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. (Hebrews 1:3-4)

The Greek word “Word” in this verse is rhema, meaning the spoken, active Word of God. This is different from the written text that sits on a page. Hebrews tells us that Jesus upholds all things, everything in existence, by this spoken Word of His power. Creation is not merely sustained by silent divine will. It is actively held together by a Word that continues to be spoken over it.

That same rhema Word is available to you. If Jesus can uphold the entire universe by speaking, then speaking His Word in faith over your situation is not a small or insignificant act. It is participating in the same authority that holds galaxies in place. This is part of what Scripture means by healing and wholeness. The Greek word sozo, used throughout the New Testament for salvation and healing, carries the sense of being delivered, protected, healed, preserved, and made completely whole. It is a rich word, encompassing far more than being rescued from danger.

After purging our sins, Jesus sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, a position of finished authority. He is no longer working to earn that seat. He already holds it. From that seat, His spoken Word continues to uphold, sustain, and make whole everything that comes under it, including you.

Practical Application

Speak the Word of God out loud today over situations that are trying to get you worried. It’s not enough to believe silently. Declare it with your mouth.
