The Word of God that Carries Over

Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother. (Mark 10:19)

From the time God announced the plan of salvation to the day of Pentecost, it was four thousand years. Four thousand years of God working from the outside in, dealing with people who were not yet reborn, giving them laws written on stone because He could not yet write them on their hearts.

But here is something important to understand: not everything in the Old Testament was left behind at the cross. Some things carried over into the New Covenant because they reflect the eternal character and nature of God. So when you read the Old Testament, you have to ask yourself, “Does this show up in the New Testament too?” Because if it does, it is still good. It still applies. It is one of those things God said to them that He is also saying to you.

The tithe carries over. Honoring your parents carries over. Walking in love carries over. The principles of sowing and reaping all carry over. These are not just Old Covenant restrictions; they are Kingdom principles that appear throughout both Testaments because they are rooted in who God is, not just what He told one group of people at one point in history.

This is why you can’t just dismiss the Old Testament. You should study it, ask the right questions, and allow the Holy Spirit to show you what is timeless and what is temporary. Things are different with us because of Jesus, but God's character remains the same.

Practical Application

Choose one principle you see in both the Old and New Testaments—like tithing, forgiveness, or honoring authority—and today, commit to walking in it fully. Do so not out of obligation, but from the understanding that it’s a Kingdom reality that leads to Kingdom results.

Matthew 23:23; Exodus 20:12
