Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? (Hebrews 10:29)

When Scripture refers to the Spirit of Grace, it is talking about the Holy Spirit. He has at least 13 names in the New Testament. Names matter to God. For example, He changed Abram’s and Sarai’s names, and He told Zechariah to name his son John. He revealed Himself to mankind through several names throughout the Bible. He used names like Jehovah Jireh - the Lord who provides; Jehovah Rapha - the Lord who heals you; Jehovah Shalom - the Lord is our peace, and more. These names signify who He is and what He does.

The Holy Spirit also has several names in the Bible. We know him as the Comforter, the Holy Ghost, the Spirit, the Breath of God, the Good Gift of the Father, and as we see in Hebrews 10:29, He is the Spirit of Grace. Note that we use the word He when referring to the Holy Spirit, because He is not an it or a feeling or a force. The Holy Spirit is a person, the same way Jesus and God the Father are people.

As a person, the Holy Spirit has feelings. Scripture tells us He can be quenched, grieved, and resisted. These words all describe how a person feels who wants what is best for you but is pushed away. Holy Spirit can help you do all God has called you to do, but if you push Him away, you restrict Him.

Grace is not a position; it is not a feeling; it is clearly a person. He is the Third Person of the Trinity, the Holy Ghost.

Practical Application

Welcome the Spirit of Grace into your heart, home, and nation. Let the Holy Spirit help you do all God has called you to do. He will empower you to do what seems to be impossible!

John 3:34, John 14:26
