The Shield That Covers Everything

Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. (Ephesians 6:16)

The phrase “above all” is not about a list of priorities; it means “overall.” The shield of faith does not protect just one area of your life. It covers everything: the breastplate, the helmet, the feet, and over all of it. It is the piece of the armor that covers the rest of the armor. And what it quenches is not some of the fiery darts. The Bible says that every single fiery dart that is thrown your way is blocked by the shield of faith. When it is operating correctly, nothing gets through.

The Greek word for faith in this verse is pistis, which denotes active, living trust grounded in what God has said. To understand how faith functions, you have to go back to the beginning. God created everything that exists in our world by the words of faith. When He spoke, things were created. Every time He spoke, something came into existence. Light came when He said, “Let there be light.” Dry land came when He said, "Dry land.” And then He made you in His image and likeness. That means you are called to operate in the same way.

You say, and it comes to pass. The shield of faith is not passive. It speaks.

The shield is made of the Word of God, believed and spoken. That is what quenches every dart the enemy sends your way.

Practical Application

The next time a fiery dart comes, whether it is a fear, a doubt, a discouraging thought, or a report that contradicts what God said, do not think about it or analyze it. Raise the shield by speaking by faith. Find the Word that directly addresses it, speak it out loud, and believe it when you say it. That is the shield of faith in operation.
