The Rain in Its Due Season

And it shall come to pass, if ye shall hearken diligently unto my commandments which I command you this day, to love the Lord your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul, That I will give you the rain of your land in his due season, the first rain and the latter rain, that thou mayest gather in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil. And I will send grass in thy fields for thy cattle, that thou mayest eat and be full. Take heed to yourselves, that your heart be not deceived, and ye turn aside, and serve other gods, and worship them; And then the Lord's wrath be kindled against you, and he shut up the heaven, that there be no rain, and that the land yield not her fruit; and lest ye perish quickly from off the good land which the Lord giveth you. (Deuteronomy 11:12-17)
The Bible always ties provision directly to obedience. When God tells us to do something, we are to quickly hearken to His voice and diligently follow His commandments while loving Him with our whole heart. This is not a formula for earning God's love. God loves us regardless. Instead, it describes how the covenant relationship functions.
Provision consistently flows to those who follow God's ways rather than doing their own thing. The specificity in this verse is particularly worth noting. God did not simply promise generic blessings. He promised rain in its due season, both the first and the latter rain, precisely timed for the moments when the land actually needs it at each stage of growth. God is a God of perfect timing, not only for final outcomes.
The passage doesn’t just talk about provision; it also carries a warning. When we choose not to follow God and instead serve other things, that mindset can disrupt the flow of provision in our lives. It is not because God becomes vindictive, but rather because the covenant relationship with Him is what channels the provision. Staying aligned with God's Word and His ways is not supposed to be some difficult responsibility. When we obey His Word from a heart of love, the rain, both literal and figurative, will arrive exactly when it is needed most.
