The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken. (Deuteronomy 18:15)
This prophecy, given by Moses, was about Jesus as a prophet. However, Jesus wasn’t just a great prophet; He was THE Prophet. He was Not just One who spoke for God, but He was the One who spoke AS God. While other prophets carried messages from God, Jesus, THE Message, as Moses foretold, came “from among” His brethren. This means Jesus was fully human, born of a woman, yet fully God. Jesus made it clear that He was not just speaking from His own opinion, but as God’s mouthpiece and He only said what the Father said.
Jesus was like Moses, only greater. Where Moses delivered Israel from Egypt, Jesus delivered the world from the bondage of sin. When Moses lifted his hands, the water parted; when Jesus stretched out His hands, He opened the doors of salvation to all. Jesus wasn’t just a prophet; He was also a Priest and a King.
Moses wrapped up this verse by telling those listening to harken to Jesus. The Hebrew word for harken means to listen with the intent to obey. When you hear the words of Jesus, you need to do so with the purpose of following what you hear.
Don’t just admire Jesus as a great prophet, but as the Son of God, the Messiah, and the risen Savior of the world. When you obey His Word, His power comes with your obedience, and it will change any situation by the power of God.
Practical Application
Every command and word Jesus spoke was a prophecy waiting to become reality, and His words carry all the power of God. This means that whenever you see Jesus make a promise, it’s not just a suggestion; it’s something you can trust will happen. Speak what Jesus speaks. Declare His Word and expect to see things change.
