And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues. (Mark 16:17)
Jesus had conquered death, stripped the keys from the enemy, and then declared what those who follow Him would do in His name. This wasn’t meant only for select super-spiritual believers. Jesus did not say these signs would follow apostles or pastors; He said they would follow all who believe. When you believe in His onoma, His name, His authority, and His character, Heaven itself endorses your actions. Your life is intended to demonstrate the evidence of His resurrection through supernatural power.
The Greek word for signs is semeion, meaning indications or proof. In other words, Jesus was saying that casting out devils, walking in divine protection, and healing the sick are the marks of someone who believes.
The devils no longer have authority when you are around and use the name of Jesus. You carry His onoma (name) to perform any semeion (sign) that is needed. That means devils must flee when you believe and speak.
Jesus also said that believers would speak with “new tongues.” The word new in Greek is kainos and means fresh, renewed, unprecedented; and the phrase glossa (tongue) means a language not naturally acquired. That means it will be a fresh language that you have never learned but have received. You didn’t study to speak it; you surrendered your mouth to declare it. When you pray in tongues, you’re praying the perfect will of God into the situation. In fact, every “fresh tongue” that you declare is evidence that Heaven is still sending daily updates to believers. When you say, “in Jesus’ name,” you aren’t just speaking a phrase; you are using authority and identity. Faith in His Name makes you unstoppable, unbeatable, and clearly marked by power.
Practical Application
Don’t chase signs and wonders. Trust what God’s Word says and expect them to follow as you walk in obedience to God’s Word. Act on your faith by laying hands on the sick, casting out demons, and speaking in new tongues when the opportunity arises.
Acts 5:16; Acts 10:46
