The Humility That Moves Jesus
Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself: for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof: Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed. For I also am a man set under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. (Luke 7:6-8)
The centurion sent word to Jesus that he was not worthy for Jesus to even enter his home, and instead asked Him to speak the word, confident that would be enough. He explained his reasoning through his own experience with military authority. He gave commands, and those under his authority obeyed without him needing to be physically present to enforce them.
That centurion understood something profound about how authority functions, and he applied that understanding directly to Jesus. If one word could move soldiers around without him being anywhere near them, then one word from Jesus could heal a servant without Jesus ever having to set foot in the house. That was a revelation about how the Kingdom operates.
Scripture tells us that Jesus marveled at that. The Greek word behind "great," the one used to describe this man's faith, is megas. It means the highest measure there is. And notice what actually moved Jesus. It wasn't a big ceremony. It wasn't an impressive set of credentials. It was plain, humble confidence that His word by itself was enough. That combination, being humble while being completely certain about Jesus' authority, is the posture faith is supposed to have.
Practical Application
Come to God about your need today, just as the centurion came to Jesus about his. Seek the Word of God for the promises you can hold onto, then declare His Word out loud. Trust that the spoken Word is enough, and let your confidence rest right there on it.
