The Holy Ghost Teaches, Sickness Does Not

But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. (John 14:26)
There is a common assumption that God sometimes allows sickness or hardship into a person's life to teach them a lesson. This idea sounds humble on the surface, but it does not hold up to what Scripture actually teaches about how God instructs His people. Jesus was clear about who carries out the work of teaching believers, and it is not sickness, disease, poverty, or suffering. It is the Holy Ghost.
The Holy Spirit's specific job, according to Jesus, is to teach and to bring things to remembrance. He does this through the Word, opening understanding as believers meditate on what God has already said. That is a very different mechanism from using pain or hardship as an instructional tool. God does not need sickness to teach you something He could just as easily reveal through His Spirit and His Word.
This distinction matters because attributing hardship to God's teaching method can quietly discourage someone from seeking healing, as though doing so might interfere with a lesson God intended. But if the Holy Ghost is the actual teacher and the Word is the actual curriculum, then sickness was never assigned that role in the first place. Whatever lesson someone believes they are learning through suffering, the Holy Spirit is fully capable of teaching that same lesson without requiring the suffering at all.
Practical Application
If you have believed that God sent a hardship in your life as a teaching tool, ask the Holy Spirit today to reveal what He actually wants to teach you through His Word instead, apart from that suffering.
1 Corinthians 2:12; Psalm 32:8
