According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue. (2 Peter 1:3)

Peter wrote to explain to seasoned Christians that God's divine power has already provided everything necessary for life and godliness. That provision is not something you have to wait for or earn through spiritual performance. It has already been given. But Peter attached a specific condition to the provision's effectiveness in a person's life, and it centers on how we apply the knowledge we receive.

The Greek word translated as “knowledge” in this verse is epignosis, which denotes a full, experiential understanding rather than surface-level information. This is not simply knowing facts about God. It is a deepening, growing familiarity with who He actually is, gained through consistent time in His Word and presence. As this knowledge deepens, the truth of what God has provided becomes clearer and more accessible.

This connects directly to what James taught about faith and action. As epignosis increases, believers do not simply understand more truth intellectually; they begin to live their faith. When you live your faith in everyday life, you begin to see the power of God at work. Growing in the full knowledge of God happens by experience, not just information.

Practical Application

Take time every day to grow in epignosis, that deep experiential knowledge of God, rather than simply gathering more information. When you read the Word, pause and pray and ask the Holy Spirit to lead you toward action, not just understanding.
