But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. (Galatians 5:22-25)
Fruit reveals the type of tree that has grown. The fruit of the Spirit shows that the Holy Spirit is rooted in your heart and life. These are not just personality traits or moral goals. Instead, they are supernatural manifestations that appear when a believer crucifies the flesh and allows the Spirit to take control.
Gifts can be given instantly, but fruit must be cultivated and grown over time. Love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance are not emotions. They are byproducts of the Holy Ghost.
Paul continued by saying that against such there is no law. That means even the law of sin and death, the law Satan operates under, has no authority or power over someone walking in the Spirit. However, the Spirit doesn’t produce fruit in a field still full of weeds. If the flesh is still leading, the fruit will be lacking. If Christ lives in you and the Spirit flows through you, then the fruit of the Spirit will grow within you and be evident through you. You have to crucify the flesh and walk daily in the Spirit because in a world full of counterfeits, fakes, and phonies, your fruit proves that God is still real and working.
Practical Application
Review the list of what’s included in the fruit of the Spirit and ask the Holy Spirit: “Which of these does my life least display?” Then ask the Holy Spirit for wisdom on how to better develop that aspect of the fruit.
