The Church Built on Revelation

And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. (Matthew 16:17-18)
When Peter declared that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of the living God, Jesus told him something remarkable. He said that flesh and blood did not reveal that to Peter; His heavenly Father did. That was the Father opening Peter's eyes to spiritual reality. Then Jesus made a statement that has been debated ever since: 'Upon this rock I will build my church.' He used two different Greek words in that sentence, and the distinction changes everything.
Peter's name is Petros, meaning a loose stone, a single piece of rock. But the rock Jesus said He would build His church on is petra, meaning a massive, immovable bedrock. Jesus was not saying He would build His church on Peter the man. Peter was a fallible individual who would deny Jesus three times in the same night. God does not build His church on men who make mistakes. He builds it on the Word of God, which is infallible. Jesus was pointing to the revealed Word, the kind of revelation the Father had just poured into Peter's heart. That is the rock He would build His church on. This is why meditation on the Word matters so deeply. It is not an academic exercise or a way to accumulate biblical knowledge. It is about positioning yourself to receive revelation. When you dig consistently into the Word, when you meditate on it day and night, God begins to open things to you that you could not have figured out on your own. The more you meditate, the more God can reveal.
And then look at what Jesus said would result: the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. That is not a defensive promise. Gates are barriers, not weapons. What Jesus said is that a church, a believer, or a life built on the revealed Word will not be stopped. It will continue to move forward.
Practical Application
Spend time in the Word today, not just for information but for revelation. Ask the Holy Spirit specifically to open your understanding.
