Talitha Cumi - Arise

And he suffered no man to follow him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James. And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly. And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying. And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise. And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment. (Mark 5:37-42)

Those gathered to mourn Jairus’ daughter’s death had decided nothing could be done. When Jesus said she was “only sleeping,” they laughed at Him in scorn. When you are walking in faith, know that many will attack you, mock you, and try to derail your faith because it makes them uncomfortable. Jesus didn’t attack them or even respond. He simply kicked them out. He removed the doubters from the room before proceeding with the miracle. He didn’t even take all His disciples with Him. He knew that all He needed were the parents, who held authority over their child, and those who would stand with Him in faith.

Sometimes the environment surrounding a situation must be adjusted before faith can operate freely. Once Jesus had the right people in the environment, He spoke directly and simply, taking the girl by the hand and telling her to “arise.” There was no elaborate ceremony, no extended prayer, just a direct word spoken by faith to a situation everyone else had already declared final. And immediately, she arose and walked. Jairus had heard, received, believed, and spoken his request, and Jesus' action brought that faith to its final result, regardless of how final the circumstances had appeared.

Practical Application

If circumstances around you seem final, do not let doubters surround you. Keep believing, even when you are the only one still standing for it.

Mark 9:23; 2 Kings 4:32
