And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. (Acts 2:1-4)
Pentecost was not just a one-time event. It was God giving believers a Spirit-filled life that includes Spirit-empowered speech. When the Holy Ghost fills you, your mouth becomes a vessel for Heaven’s utterance. Pentecost was not merely a moment in history; it serves as a pattern for believers to follow. When the day was fully come, they were in one accord and in one place. Unity and fellowship with other believers are important. The Bible does not say they were talented, famous, or fully trained. It says they were together, and Jesus instructed them to be there. Faith means trusting God by obeying His commands, standing firm in His promises, and trusting Him to keep His Word.
The word "filled” means that God occupied the entire space. The Holy Spirit entered in a way that took over the atmosphere. That is what happens when God moves. He does not fit Himself into your schedule; He establishes His presence and changes the atmosphere. And then, the fire appeared. Tongues like fire sat upon each of them. This was not reserved for the elite spiritual leaders in the room; it rested on each of them. God was making a public statement that the days of spiritual access for only a few were coming to an end.
In the Old Covenant, the Spirit came upon select individuals for specific tasks. In the New Covenant, the Spirit resides in and upon believers. The immediate outcome at Pentecost was that they started to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. Tongues are Spirit-guided utterances, a supernatural form of speech.
Practical Application
Speaking in tongues is a collaborative effort between you and the Holy Spirit, allowing the Holy Spirit to use your mouth. Your mouth is like a steering wheel or a rudder. When you speak by the Spirit, you align your mouth with God's will.
Acts 4:31; Luke 24:49
