In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory. (Ephesians 1:13-14)

Something astonishing and powerful happened when you heard the truth—the good news of God’s salvation—and placed your trust in Christ. The Holy Spirit sealed you. The word sealed in Greek is sphragizo and means a stamp of approval.

In ancient times, a king or official would use their signet ring to stamp documents, ensuring they were genuine and protected from alteration or forgery. Paul said the Holy Spirit has marked you as God's authentic child. You are one of a kind. You were created as God’s masterpiece. You have been made secure, and God plans for your preservation.

Paul also referred to the Holy Spirit as the earnest, a word that implies a down payment or guarantee. That indicates that God has made a pledge to us—He has deposited the Holy Spirit within us, not only as a seal but also as proof that all His promises will surely be fulfilled.

The presence of the Holy Spirit within you isn't just a nice feeling or an occasional comfort; He is a continual, reassuring reminder that the promises of God are always yes and amen! This week, regularly affirm your spiritual identity and security in Christ. Remind yourself often that you’re not alone—God’s Spirit is actively preserving and guiding you toward His promises.

Practical Application

It’s easy to feel as though you are doing a task alone or that no one recognizes the effort you put into your responsibilities. Remind yourself that you are not alone; the Holy Spirit is with you, actively preserving and guiding you toward every promise God has ever made.

Ephesians 4:30; 2 Corinthians 1:22
