Nevertheless the Lord raised up judges, which delivered them out of the hand of those that spoiled them. (Judges 2:16)
There is nothing worse than a crooked judge. There are people in black robes and gavels who do not uphold God’s righteous way. Indeed, not all judges act fairly.
This verse highlights a pivotal moment in Israel's history when God, in His mercy, raised judges to deliver the Israelites from their oppressors. The period of the judges was marked by a cycle of sin, oppression, repentance, and deliverance. Each time the Israelites turned away from God, they faced severe consequences; the people felt the effects of their sin and repented, and God responded to their cries for help by appointing judges to lead and deliver them. These judges, however, were not merely judicial leaders but also military and spiritual leaders. They guided the people toward righteousness and restored justice in the land.
Righteous judges bring stability and peace to society and the community, while corrupt judges lead to injustice and suffering. The importance of having just and moral leaders cannot be overstated. God outlines in His Word how vital it is to pray for and support righteous leaders, as their decisions have far-reaching impacts on society.
The enemy would like nothing more than to cause division and controversy surrounding the righteous judges and keep the wicked hidden from the spotlight so they can continue to erode society with their unjust practices.
This is why believers must pray before we vote and research what a judge supports, what they believe in, and how they act. Are they biblically sound in their decisions? Do they support things that are against God’s Word? If so, then you don’t want that judge because the future of your community, and even your own life, will somehow be affected by them.
Practical Application
When elections are approaching, research and understand the backgrounds and values of those running for judicial and leadership positions. Your prayerful and informed vote can help ensure righteous individuals are placed in positions of authority.
