Peace in the Home

It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and an angry woman. (Proverbs 21:19)

The Bible says that Solomon was the wisest man ever to live. Here’s his wisdom in Proverbs 21. Solomon knew that strife in the home is not a personality conflict or a communication style. It is a spiritual problem with spiritual consequences.

Here is what most people do not connect. When strife lives in a house, the door is open to all kinds of evil. Principalities, powers, rulers of darkness, and wicked spirits can walk right through the opening that contentiousness creates. Those evil spirits will try to attack your body, mess with your money, and take the peace away from the house. They take everything they can get their hands on once that door is open.

A woman who fills her home with strife and anger is not just making her husband miserable. She is dismantling her own defenses and opening the door to the very forces that want to destroy her life, her children, and everything she holds dear.

The same applies to the man. A husband who brings bitterness, harshness, and anger into the home does the same kind of damage. Peace in the home is not the wife's job alone. It is the responsibility of both parties.

Wise people understand this before they make a covenant. The first thing to learn about a potential spouse is not their appearance or accomplishments. It is their character under pressure. Can you have peace with this person? Are they someone who pursues peace or someone who is always creating drama? You must find this out because you are choosing the spiritual environment you will live in for the rest of your life. And that environment directly affects your prayer life. Make peace in your home a primary focus.

Practical Application

Take an honest look at the atmosphere in your home. Are you adding to peace or to strife? Which habit is fueling contention instead of peace? Find out and make a deliberate decision today to change it.
