Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord. (Romans 12:11)

The world is full of laziness. Even people in the church use “waiting on the Lord” as an excuse for procrastination. Procrastination usually disguises itself as patience. In Romans 12:11, the Apostle Paul urged us not to be slothful or sluggish in our efforts, but to live a life of zeal as we are passionate about carrying out the work God has given to us to fulfil.

The term ‘not slothful in business’ doesn't just refer to our professional endeavors or earthly tasks. It encompasses every aspect of our lives where we have responsibilities and assignments. Whether it is our work, ministry, relationships, or personal growth, we are called to approach them with enthusiasm and dedication.

On top of this, the concept of being fervent in spirit “serving the Lord” means to have a burning desire and a sense of urgency in doing the assignment God calls us to. It is about having a heart that is on fire for God and His purposes. When we are fervent in spirit, we don't just go through the motions or do the bare minimum. We go above and beyond, pouring out our time, energy, and resources to honor and glorify God. I always say that people should be in a hurry to do the work of God. Once you know what God has called you to do, there should be no waiting and no stopping you from moving forward.

Having a fervent spirit requires a shift in our mindset. It means viewing our service as a privilege and an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others. It means being proactive, taking initiative, and pursuing excellence in all that we do. It means being intentional about seeking God's guidance, relying on His strength, and staying connected to Him through prayer and His Word.

Practical Application

Take a moment to evaluate your level of enthusiasm in your service to the Lord. Are you giving your best and being proactive, or have you become complacent or sluggish? Make a conscious decision to be fervent in spirit and serve the Lord wholeheartedly. Be honest with yourself and identify areas where you can purposely improve your attitude and expectation.
