Mountains are Made or Moved

For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. (Mark 11:23)

When we teach Mark 11:23, we often focus on the promise that you can speak to mountains and see them moved. And that is exactly what Jesus said. It is one of the most powerful truths in Scripture about the authority a believer carries. But there is another side of this verse that does not get nearly as much attention, and it is just as real. The same principle that moves mountains can also create them.

Jesus said that what you say with your mouth, combined with what you believe in your heart, is what you will have. He did not put a qualifier on it, saying it only works for positive things. The spiritual law is the law. What flows consistently out of your heart through your mouth is what gets produced in your life. If fear has taken up residence in your heart and you are speaking fear, speaking doubt, speaking defeat, speaking the worst-case scenario, you are not just predicting what will happen. You are participating in it.

One of the main ways things get into your heart is through what you say repeatedly. There is a connection between your mouth and your heart that most people do not realize is working all the time, in both directions. You speak things that reinforce what you believe, and the things you speak repeatedly begin to reinforce themselves. This is why the enemy works so hard to get you to say the wrong thing. He knows that if he can get your mouth in agreement with his plan instead of God's plan, the law of Mark 11:23 starts working against you instead of for you.

So today the question is not just “what mountain do you need moved?” The question is, “What have you been building with your words?” You have to get honest about this because God gave you a mouth that functions as a weapon, and that weapon points in whatever direction your heart is aimed.

Practical Application

Before you speak about a situation you are facing today, stop and check what direction your words are going. Are you speaking the problem or the promise?
