And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. (Luke 4:16-19)

When it was time for Jesus to begin His ministry, He didn’t hire a marketing consultant or a website designer to define what God called Him to do. Of course, He didn’t have the things we have today, still it is notable that Jesus didn’t seek any influential man’s approval of what God called Him to do. Instead, Jesus found Himself in the Book. He is the Messiah whom prophets had foretold throughout the Old Testament.

When you want to know what God has called you to do, begin by doing what Jesus did—find yourself in the Book. Learn who you are in Christ. Declare the promises of God over your life. Acknowledge that you are no longer a sinner, but you are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. (2 Corinthians 5:21) You are a child of God. (John 1:12) The Holy Ghost lives in you, (1 Corinthians 6:19-20) so greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world. (1 John 4:4)

Practical Application

Everyone needs to know who they are and what their purpose is on this earth. Don’t seek human approval or direction; begin by finding yourself in the Book.

Isaiah 61:1; Acts 10:38
