Honor is the Culture of Heaven

Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord. (Colossians 3:20)

Honor is the culture of Heaven. Everything God the Father, God the Son, or God the Holy Spirit does is with the attitude and in the atmosphere of honor.

As followers of Christ, we are called to show honor to the people God has put in our lives. When we honor the people God has brought across our paths, we also honor God.

Honor is a lost practice in most of society today. People are quick to shout what they deserve and feel entitled to have things simply because they exist, yet fewer and fewer people are seeking what they can do to help and honor their fellow man.

This isn’t just the case in our modern context. This was happening in the city of Colossae as well. The church there was facing many challenges, including false teachers, persecution, and other difficulties. Sometimes when people go through challenging times, they don’t feel honored, so they decide not to give honor to others.

However, whether life is going great or terrible, God requires honor. That is why Paul explained to the believers in Colossae to put on the new self that displays as compassion, kindness, humility, and patience. Paul was not calling for believers to blindly follow authority. He was calling for honor in our attitude, our words, and our actions toward them.

Some have said “I just can’t respect my parent because of what they have done.” Respect is earned; honor is given. Honor is a gift. No one must deserve your honor. You choose to give it.

If someone isn’t yet honorable, it may be because no one has sown enough honor toward them.

Practical Application

Honoring our parents is pleasing to the Lord. Find ways you can sow honor into parents, even if they have made some mistakes. When you do, you show respect and honor to your parents, but are also pleasing God as you align yourself to His will.

Ephesians 6:2; Proverbs 22:6
