Holy Men. Holy Words. Holy Ghost

Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. (2 Peter 1:20-21)

Peter was clear in writing his epistle: the Bible was not created by the will of man. It wasn’t the byproduct of religious fervor or political power. It came to pass because the Holy Ghost moved holy men. The Holy Ghost didn’t suddenly appear on the day of Pentecost out of nowhere; He has been integral to the history of the world, first hovering over the face of the waters and then speaking to men of God about what they were to write in Scripture.

Men, moved by the Holy Ghost, wrote and translated what God had placed in their hearts. That means the words on the page are supernatural in origin and can affect not only your intellect but also your spirit and the world around you.

The Holy Spirit specifically revealed to these men over 400 prophecies about the coming Messiah, all of which concerned what He would do and be like. All of them came to pass through Jesus.

Because the Word of God is born of the Spirit, it isn’t open to private interpretation. That means you can’t say, “I feel like what God really meant here was…” No. The Word does not change based on culture, feelings, or politics. The Word is the Word. The same Holy Spirit that moved on the prophets is the Holy Spirit who lives in you.

Understanding this should inspire us to honor the Word even more. When you declare it, do so with reverence and awe. This is the Word of God, and when it is spoken, the very power of God comes into effect.

Practical Application

Are you neglecting to read the Word? Or are you organizing your life and schedule around hearing it preached, taught, and reading it yourself? Examine your schedule and life to see if you have allowed other things to overshadow your opportunity to hear the Word. If so, make adjustments.

2 Peter 1:19; Revelation 22:19
